Ps4 has space but wont download

Ps4 has space but wont download

ps4 has space but wont download

Surely there must be a way that updates wont take this much space. My update didn't download because I don't have enough free space on my PS4, space for the whole game, it will only download what it needs, but it. This doesn't answer why it doesn't work, but As a workaround, if you have an SD card, you can insert it and it will automatically download to the card instead. Because of how the PlayStation 4 stores games, you must have at least the original file size of the game available in free space to install any update. Warfare because most other games still utilize file copying but do not.

Ps4 has space but wont download - difficult

Cannot download update because there is not enough free space.

You need almost 3x the amount of space.
* Room for the downloaded file
* Room to extract said file
* Room to install file
After installation the downloaded and extracted files are automatically deleted.

You have 30gb but you actually need 90+gb.

No update for any game should be over a gig in size it’s ridiculous

The fix is simple, do away with HD megatextures and sound.
And you will all live to grow and thrive and lead happy lives...
...until old age take you back to the weeds.
This is one of the most annoying things PS4 have.

I think the reason it tells you that is because the update also takes into consideration the game size as well, so when it updates it need a big size.

A game like RDR2 update needs way more free space than a simply Fortnite update.

A good solution is to always keep 30% of your storage empty, and buying an external HDD like other users suggested is going to be a neat idea.

Try to also delete games you finished and won't come back to.

I really hope when PS5 comes out this issue will be no more.

he has about 6, assuming it's a 500GB internal. He'd need about 20 to 25GB more

Save yourself the headache and get an external HDD. I don't know how people deal without one this late into the PS4's life.

I'm certain I have enough space, so I don't know what's causing this.

The ps4 has a bad habit of lying about how much space it wants for things or has free, it’s not uncommon to need to delete 50gb to download a game that’s less than 5gb

Basically this, and no, that’s not normal, the ps4 is just very badly designed when it comes to file management

I've typed out that info and derivatives of it so many times, it's crazy.

only PS3 required double space for new game downloads. Not for updates or anything else.

PS4 is a really complex setup

And you're contributing to the misconception then...

physical media:

updates require free space equating to the full size of the total updates released so far.

eg; update 1.7 is 200MB, but to go from 1.0 to 1.6, it's 16GB.
In that case, you would need 16GB free, after which it would verify your existing content and then download the 200MB 1.7 update.

digital:

technically has no patches. The digital game stored is always the latest version on the PSN servers, so if a 15GB digital game comes out with a 200MB update, you will need 15GB free before the download will commence. Afterwards it will verify what is already present and only get what you haven't got.

"You need double the space" is closer to what's happening than that nonsense.

For starters, there's no difference between physical/digital when installing an update to an already installed game. The only difference between physical/digital is when you first instal the game. Using your theoretical ~16.2GB 1.7 update as reference for both:

Physical = Installs game from disc while downloading the current ~16.2GB 1.7 update file
Digital = Downloads the game with the current ~16.2GB 1.7 update file included

Once a game is installed, whether it be from disc or download, the process for future updates is the same. The PS4 requires double the existing update file AND double the current update file. (It's double the existing file everyone overlooks) Using your example of going from 1.6 -> 1.7:

- Current 1.6 update file size = 16GB
- 1.7 update file size = 200MB
- Required space = ~32.4GB

Why is ~32.4GB of space required when the new update is only 200MB? The reason is becuase the PS4 requires double the new 1.7 update files AND the existing 1.6 update to create the new 1.7 update file. It needs the free space to:

1. Download the 200MB 1.7 update file
2. Copy the previous 16GB 1.6 update file
3. Create the new ~16.2GB 1.7 update file = ~32.4GB needed at this point of the instal
4. Delete the 200MB 1.7 update file and 16GB 1.06 copy
5. Overwrite the old 16GB 1.6 update with the new ~16.2GB 1.7 update

The reason I used ~ is becuase a 200MB update won't necessarily add 200MB. If the 200MB update is bug fixes that are overwriting old code in 1.6 the update file size for 1.07 could remain at 16GB, which would in turn reduce the required space, and result in 1.07 having the same size as 1.06.

This is why 130GB of free space can been enough space to download the recent updates for large games like Assassin's Creed Odyssey (117.3GB), Red Dead Redemption 2 (105.5GB), Grand Theft Auto V (77.28GB), but not be enough space for Fallout 76 (71.98GB). Fallout 76, while being the smaller of the 4, needed ~140GB of free space for it's lastest update, due to the massive size of it's update file. (In order to fix Fallout 76 after release Bethesda released a massive update that was larger than the base game... That massive update, along with subsequent updates has to be copied with every new update) I dread the Wastelanders update becuase it's going to drastically increase the space need with all the new audio files for the dialogue alone... Which will then affect all future Fallout 76 updates as the Wasterlanders data (and current data) has to be copied with every new update... I wouldn't be surprised if Fallout 76 will need 200GB+ of free space for even a 100MB update by the end of the year.

There really is no good explanation of why it's like this, aside from "because the PS4's file management and update system sucks". At this point, better to just accept it, delete stuff until you have enough space, and hope that Sony fixes this with the PS5.
