AMD Graphic Drivers - Install and Configure

For the best results playing Star Citizen, you need to have your AMD card drivers updated and settings configured. This article may be long, but it provides every bit of information you need for getting your AMD game ready!

Fully uninstall your current driver or older drivers

When upgrading your drivers, we recommend removing the old drivers before installing. You don't have to do this, but it can help!

  1. Right-click on your Windows button.
  2. Select Search and enter Uninstall Program.
  3. Select the option for removing programs:. The feature may be Uninstall a program or Add/Remove programs depending on your Windows version.
  4. Select and uninstall the older drivers for your AMD card. AMD Catalyst Install Manager provides an option to Express uninstall ALL AMD Software, which includes Catalyst. Or you can choose Uninstall Manager to selectively uninstall.

Download and install drivers

  1. For the latest driver, visit AMD. Follow the prompts to search for and download the driver.
  2. Install your driver.
  3. Fully shutdown your computer, then boot. Restarting will not fully clear Windows memory caching.

Check AMD driver version in Windows Device Manager

Running the automated driver check and update for your graphic drivers may not always work. After running the AMDdriver updates, you can always check the Windows Device Manager.

  1. Right-click on your Windows icon, click Search.
  2. Search for and open Device Manager.
  3. Expand the Display adapters.
  4. Right-click your graphics card, select Properties, and click the Driver tab.
You want to verify this driver version and date are correct with the latest driver install.

Always use your AMD Card

Some systems such as certain laptops may have more than one display adapter, such as a dedicated GPU and an IGP(Integrated Graphics Processor) on the CPU. In this situation you may need to ensure you are using the correct device. Catalyst Control Center and drivers may vary greatly. This information may not be exactly correct for all versions. If you are changing this setting on a Laptop, make sure you have high or full power. Low power settings may block or not provide options.

  1. Completely close the Launcher.
  2. Make sure you have the latest AMD driver installed.
  3. Open AMD Radeon Settings or control center.
  4. Select Preferences, then Radeon Additional Settings.
  5. Expand Power and click Switchable Graphics Global Settings.
  6. Select High performance for the Graphic Setting. Click Apply.
  7. Click Switchable Graphics Application Settings.
  8. Select the Star Citizen exe from the list. If not listed, click Add Application and locate the Star Citizen exe: (install drive)\Program Files\Roberts Space Industries\Star Citizen\LIVE\Bin64.
  9. Select High performance for the Graphic Setting. Click Apply.
NOTE: For AMD, you can also track the GPU being used per application through the Switchable Graphics Application Monitor.
  10. If you overclock your graphics card, you may also need to reset to defaults.
  11. Make sure all settings are saved and close the Control Panel.
  12. Try launching the game again.

Resolutions and Scaling in AMD

Your AMD card settings may cause issues with resolutions and scaling when loading the game. These changes will always keep those in check.

  1. Open the AMD Radeon Settings.
  2. Click Display.
  3. Check and click GPU Scaling to Off. If you have multiple monitors, check for each.
  4. Check and set Scaling Mode to Preserve aspect ratio. If you have multiple monitors, check for each.

Override Fullscreen Optimization

We recommend making these changes on your RSI files. These work for all graphic cards. Disabling fullscreen optimization should keep 3D Vision from activating and crashing your game. You may need to configure this for the RSI Launcher and Star Citizen .exe files.

  1. Right-click the RSI Launcher desktop shortcut. Or go to the .exe directly in (install driver)\Program Files\Roberts Space Industries\RSI Launcher\RSI Launcher.exe and right-click the file.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the Compatibility tab.
  4. Enable the option Disable Fullscreen Optimization.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Navigate to (install driver)\Program Files\Roberts Space Industries\StarCitizen\Live\Bin64. Right-click the StarCitizen.exe file.
  7. Click Properties.
  8. Click the Compatibility tab.
  9. Enable the option Disable Fullscreen Optimization.
  10. Click Apply.

The game should now launch without crashing and not require overrides through a USER.cfg.

Tried everything here with no change?

If none of the previous steps showed any results, gather your game and system information files and then place a support ticket.
